Research and Data Analysis

The UBC Library Research Commons offers a variety of training workshops on data analysis and visualization, GIS, research data and citation management, and various software and online tools, including R, Python, and GitHub.

Coursera is an online training resource that can be an option for additional learning. Some suggested courses include:

Decision Science

The US Fish and Wildlife Service offers both online resources and in-person or online courses on various topics, including Decision Analysis. These are open to others outside the US Dept of the Interior, but note that the fees for in-person training can be expensive for external learners.

Teaching and Learning

The UBC Centre for Teaching, Learning, and Technology offers Instructional Skills Workshops for Grads and Postdocs, along with other teaching and learning programs and resources.

CDL students have also created a working list of graduate courses past students have taken that might be of interest to future students.

Communication and Facilitation

Compass has some training resources on how to use the Message Box to help better communicate our science to different audiences.

Other Professional Development Training

The UBC Graduate School and the Postdoctoral Fellows Office offers professional development training opportunities throughout the year.

Staff also have access to various learning resources from UBC Human Resources, and may be eligible for some professional development funding.

Many academic societies, such as the Society for Conservation Biology, the Canadian Society for Ecology and Evolution, and the Ecological Society of America, offer online workshops or webinars for members. Information on upcoming workshops or webinars are often sent by email to society members, and may also be available on their websites. In-person workshops and short courses are also offered as part of the annual meetings/conferences of these societies.

The Biodiversity Research Centre sometimes offers training courses on various research skills - subscribe to their email newsletter to hear about these opportunities as they come up.
